Study Session Held at Saint Philomena College Men’s Hostel Puttur
A study session was held at the Saint Philomena College Men’s Hostel, Puttur, with a focus on two key health and social issues: “The Importance of Cleanliness” and “The Impact of Alcohol and Tobacco Abuse.” The session was organized in collaboration with Patrao Hospital, Puttur, whose resource team brought valuable insights to the students.
The session was facilitated by two experienced health professionals, Johnson and Sr Janet, who delivered detailed and informative presentations on the following topics:
The Importance of Cleanliness and The Impact of Alcohol and Tobacco Abuse.
The session began with a warm welcome from Rev. Fr Rupesh Tauro, the warden of the men’s hostel. In his opening remarks, he stressed the significance of maintaining cleanliness within the hostel and its surrounding environment, urging students to take personal responsibility for keeping their living spaces clean. He also emphasized the importance of steering clear of drugs and other harmful substances, which could negatively affect both academic performance and overall well-being.
The Importance of Cleanliness : The first session, led by Sr Janet, focused on the importance of cleanliness. She highlighted the direct connection between cleanliness and health, explaining how good hygiene practices can prevent the spread of diseases. Sr Janet also spoke about the role of cleanliness in creating a positive and productive living environment, especially in communal settings such as hostels. Her presentation encouraged the students to maintain both personal hygiene and a clean shared space, which would benefit everyone in the hostel.
The Impact of Alcohol and Tobacco Abuse : The second session was presented by Mr Johnson, who discussed the serious and often irreversible consequences of alcohol and tobacco abuse. He shared alarming statistics and real-life examples of how substance abuse can destroy lives, not only affecting physical health but also damaging mental well-being and relationships. Mr. Johnson also discussed the risk of addiction and how peer pressure can lead students toward harmful habits. He urged students to make informed decisions and to avoid the temptation of substance abuse, which could hinder their personal and academic growth.
Warden’s Guidance : After the resource persons’ presentations, Rev. Fr Rupesh Tauro took the opportunity to further guide the students on maintaining cleanliness within the hostel. He reiterated the importance of keeping communal areas such as dining halls, bathrooms, and study rooms clean. He also encouraged the students to actively avoid any form of drug use, reminding them that their future and success depended on leading healthy, responsible lives.
Student Participation :The study session was attended by approximately 120 students, who showed keen interest in both topics. Many students asked insightful questions during the Q&A session, seeking clarity on how to practically implement cleanliness habits and avoid the dangers of alcohol and tobacco. The resource persons were able to provide thoughtful and practical responses, enhancing the learning experience for all attendees.
The session concluded with Rev. Fr Rupesh Tauro expressing his gratitude to the Patrao Hospital team, especially Johnson and Sr Janet, for their valuable contribution. He also thanked the students for their active participation and reminded them to apply the knowledge they gained, particularly in maintaining cleanliness and avoiding substance abuse.
This session had a positive impact, raising awareness about the importance of hygiene and the dangers of alcohol and tobacco, while also encouraging students to maintain a healthy and disciplined lifestyle within the hostel.
