Diocese of Mangalore Holds Training of Trainers Programme for Pastoral Plan 2026–2028, Strengthening Synodal Mission

The Diocese of Mangalore successfully conducted an Ongoing Formation Programme focused on the Training of Trainers (ToT) for the effective implementation of the Pastoral Plan 2026–2028. The programme was held at Shanthi Kiran, Bajjodi and brought together members of the Synodal Facilitation Team comprising Priests, religious and lay faithful, along with Diocesan Pastoral Commission secretaries, Vicars Forane and Priest representatives from various deaneries.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr Rohith Dcosta and team, setting a reflective and spiritual tone for the day. Welcoming the gathering, Rev. Fr Naveen Pinto highlighted the essence of a Synodal Church by quoting Saint Paul: “There are different gifts but the same Spirit, different ministries but the same Lord” (1 Cor 12:4–5). Emphasising the importance of pastoral planning, he recalled Pope Francis’ words that pastoral planning is not merely about drafting documents but about opening pathways for the Holy Spirit.

Delivering the inaugural address, Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, underlined the urgency of implementing the Final Document of the Synod in harmony with the CCBI and Regional Pastoral Plans, while adapting them to local realities. He reiterated the core Synodal pillars of Communion, Participation and Mission and entrusted the participants with the responsibility of being trainers who will carry the Synodal vision across the diocese.

The resource person, Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Chairman of the CCBI Pastoral Plan Facilitation Committee, offered expert guidance by presenting a comprehensive overview of the CCBI and Regional Pastoral Plans. Drawing from his pastoral experience, he shared practical examples demonstrating the positive impact of structured pastoral planning. He encouraged participants to adopt a strategic approach guided by the principles, “Think globally, act locally” and “Think big, act small.”

A concluding meeting of the diocesan commission heads charted the way forward, resolving that each commission would focus on one impactful activity per year. These initiatives will be interlinked at the diocesan, deanery (Vardo) and Parish levels to ensure coordinated and effective pastoral action.

The programme concluded with a closing prayer led by Very Rev. Msgr Maxim L. Noronha, Vicar General, followed by a vote of thanks proposed by Rev. Fr Joseph Martis.
