Papal Honor – Nigel Fernandes Conferred with Prestigious Knighthood in Bengaluru
In a rare and historic recognition of lay service, Nigel Fernandes, CEO of ATC Publishers and Arclight Global, has been officially knighted into the Order of Saint Sylvester. The papal title, one of the highest honors the Catholic Church bestows upon the laity, recognizes Fernandes’ three decades of commitment to Christian publishing and social service.

A Milestone for the Archdiocese:
The elevation to “Chevalier” was celebrated during a grand felicitation at Ascension Church, organized by Navajyothi Publications. The event brought together the top hierarchy of the Church in India, including Most Rev. Dr Peter Machado (Archbishop of Bangalore) and Archbishop Emeritus Dr Bernard Moras, alongside government officials and community leaders.

“Cardinal Oswald Gracias is presenting the Papal Knighthood to Nigel Fernandes. Observing the ceremony are Apostolic Nuncio to India Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli and Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao.”

Archbishop Machado lauded Fernandes not just for his professional success, but for his character. “His humility, piety, and generosity are the true pillars of his success,” the Archbishop noted, specifically citing Fernandes’ instrumental role in publishing the New Living Translation and English Standard Version Catholic editions.
“The Chessboard of Life”:
In a poignant acceptance speech, Chevalier Nigel Fernandes used a chessboard metaphor to describe his journey. While he now holds the rank of “Knight,” he emphasized that he would be “helpless” without the support of the many “pawns”—the Priests, Nuns, and Laypeople who supported his mission over 32 years.
“This award is not an endpoint,” Fernandes stated. “It is a call to greater commitment and a reminder of the responsibility I carry toward the Church and society.”

The Knight’s Journey:
The formal investiture took place during the 37th Plenary Assembly of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), presented by the Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli.

With this honor, Fernandes joins a select group of global lay leaders recognized for their extraordinary “zeal for religion” and contribution to the Church’s mission through professional excellence.
