Former CSST General Councillor Sr Josephette Passes Away
The Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Teresa (CSST) is mourning the passing of Sr Josephette, former General Councillor and former Provincial of the Karnataka Province, who died on Wednesday July 8 after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was remembered as a woman of deep faith, compassionate service and unwavering hope, whose life reflected her steadfast commitment to God and humanity.

A native of Mangalore, Sr Josephette dedicated her religious life to education, leadership and service. She served as a professor at Mount Carmel College (Autonomous), Bengaluru, until her retirement before taking on greater responsibilities within the congregation. She was elected Provincial of the CSST Karnataka Province for two consecutive terms and later served as General Councillor at the congregation’s Generalate for six years.
Gifted as a musician, vocalist and artist, Sr Josephette inspired many through her creativity, humility and gentle nature. Her warmth and approachable personality earned her the love and respect of fellow sisters, students and colleagues alike.

She was especially committed to the education of underprivileged and marginalised children. Though she came from a financially well-off family, she remained deeply devoted to serving the poor and generously shared her family’s resources with those in need. The property where she spent her final days had been donated by her family to the congregation in support of its mission.
In a condolence message, Sr Marie Therese and the Karnataka Province paid tribute to Sr Josephette’s courageous witness during her illness, recalling the serenity and faith with which she embraced suffering. They described her life as a powerful testimony of Christian hope and thanked God for her generous service, compassionate heart and lasting contribution to the congregation’s mission.

A Eucharistic Celebration in thanksgiving for Sr Josephette’s life will be held on July 9 at Saint Lawrence Church, Bondel, Mangalore, followed by the funeral rites.
Sr Josephette’s passing marks the end of a life devoted to prayer, education, leadership and selfless service to the Church, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
