World Cancer Day Commemorated at Father Muller with Message of Unity and Hope

World Cancer Day was commemorated at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) on February 4 with a series of meaningful initiatives aimed at raising awareness, promoting prevention, and standing in solidarity with cancer patients and survivors. Observed globally, World Cancer Day emphasizes the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and collective responsibility in the fight against cancer.

The theme for World Cancer Day 2026, “United by Unique,” highlights that while every cancer journey is different, humanity stands united against the disease. Reflecting this spirit, the Father Muller Oncology Centre (FMOC) organized the inauguration of its World Cancer Day commemorative activities at the front grounds of the Asha Kiran Block, bringing together management, faculty, students, patients, and well-wishers.

Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, presided over the programme. In his address, he stressed that cancer affects not only patients but also their families and caregivers, and that restoring normalcy requires a holistic approach involving medical care, emotional support, and social responsibility. He also cautioned against rising pollution and food adulteration, calling for increased environmental awareness to prevent lifestyle-related diseases, including cancer.

Adding vibrancy to the event, students from the Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences (Department of Hospital Administration) and the Father Muller College of Physiotherapy presented a dynamic flash mob conveying messages of resilience, strength, and hope, reinforcing the belief that cancer can be overcome.

A commemorative video featuring FMOC management and faculty was screened, reaffirming their commitment to patient-centered cancer care and echoing the theme “United by Unique.” Participants wore purple ribbons as a symbol of awareness, compassion, and solidarity with those affected by cancer.

The Departments of Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Radiotherapy of FMOC, along with the Departments of Community Medicine and Hospital Administration, unveiled banners highlighting the schedule of World Cancer Day activities. Informative drop-down banners were also displayed for public engagement.

The planned activities include:

  • Cancer Awareness Talk for FMCI employees on February 13, 2026
  • Blood Donation Drive, Hair Donation Drive, and NutriCare Competition on February 24, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Muller Mini Hall, Father Muller Convention Centre, open to the public
  • Reel-making competitions titled “Upside Down Challenge” to spread cancer awareness and “Share Your Story” as part of community outreach

Dr Nishitha Shetty, Professor of Medical Oncology, welcomed the gathering and compered the programme. Dr Elroy Saldanha, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology, spoke on the significance of World Cancer Day, while Dr Kelvin Pais, Liaison Officer, outlined the programme schedule during the banner unveiling. Dr Chandana Pai, Associate Professor of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology, proposed the vote of thanks.

The Father Muller Oncology Centre continues to lead in providing advanced and compassionate cancer care to patients from diverse backgrounds. Through these World Cancer Day initiatives, the institution invites the public to participate actively—by donating blood or hair, sharing stories, or simply offering support.

Members of the public are encouraged to follow the Father Muller Cancer Centre on Instagram or connect via WhatsApp for updates and participation in these initiatives.
