CODP Empowers 140 Students with ₹11.52 Lakh Education Aid

In a heartwarming initiative aimed at supporting higher education, the Canara Organisation for Development and Peace (CODP), the social development wing of the Diocese of Mangalore, distributed educational assistance worth ₹11.52 lakh to 140 deserving students during the Education Aid Cheque Distribution Programme 2026, held at Mother Teresa Hall on Saturday.

Presiding over the programme, Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, highlighted the spirit of generosity and solidarity that made the initiative possible. Addressing the gathering, he explained that the funds were collected through the sacrifices and contributions made by the faithful during the Lenten season.

“The assistance we provide is a reflection of our commitment to serve humanity. These funds are distributed without any discrimination based on caste, creed, or religion, supporting people in the areas of education, housing, and healthcare,” the Bishop said. He added that the initiative embodies the Gospel message of loving and caring for one’s neighbour. Reflecting this inclusive approach, the list of beneficiaries included 18 non-Catholic students.

Bishop Saldanha also reminded the students that receiving support comes with a responsibility to give back to society. Stressing the importance of social commitment, he urged the beneficiaries to become compassionate and responsible citizens who reach out to those in need. Help the needy and stand beside the underprivileged. Let your guiding principle be: ‘I shall help those around me in need, just as I have been helped by others.’ he said, inspiring the students to carry forward the spirit of service in their lives.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Rocshell from Kelarai expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Diocese of Mangalore and CODP for their timely financial assistance, which will help students continue their educational aspirations with confidence and hope. The programme was gracefully compered by Dorice Fernandes, who ensured the smooth conduct of the event. The successful organisation of the programme was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the staff of CODP and ISD, whose commitment and teamwork reflected a deep concern for the educational empowerment of deserving students.

Among those present were Rev. Fr Vincent Dsouza, Director of CODP; Rev. Fr Lawrence Cutinha, Assistant Director of CODP; and Rev. Fr Anil Ivan Fernandes, Director of the Canara Communication Centre, who joined in encouraging and supporting the students on their educational journey.

The programme once again demonstrated the Diocese of Mangalore’s unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds and ensuring that financial difficulties do not stand in the way of education and a brighter future.
