Massive Household Survey in Dakshina Kannada Reveals Vital Gaps in Cancer Screening

In a significant step toward transforming regional public health, the Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust, in collaboration with the Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O), officially released their comprehensive survey report, “A Promising New Path in Cancer Awareness,” on Saturday, March 21.

The report captures the findings of a massive 20-question survey involving over 10,000 households across the Dakshina Kannada district. The study engaged a diverse demographic—including students, housewives, daily wage workers, and professionals—to map the landscape of cancer awareness in coastal Karnataka.

High Awareness, Low Action

The survey highlights a striking paradox in the region’s healthcare behavior. While public knowledge regarding cancer is high, proactive prevention remains critically low.

Key Findings:

* Knowledge Success: Over 90% of respondents correctly identify tobacco as a primary cause of cancer and understand that early detection is the key to curability.

* Myth Busting: Most participants recognize that cancer is a non-communicable disease, proving that long-term awareness campaigns have been effective.

* The “Screening Gap”: Despite knowing the benefits, less than 15% of respondents undergo routine cancer screening.

* Barriers to Care: The primary obstacles preventing people from seeking check-ups are the fear of diagnosis, concerns over treatment costs, and the physical distance to specialized centers.

A Call for Policy Change

The event, held at M.I.O. Pumpwell, was presided over by Dr D. Suresh Rao, Managing Trustee of Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust and Director of M.I.O. Distinguished guests included MLC Ivan Dsouza and  Walter Nandalike (Founder of DaijiWorld Media).

The report is now being submitted to the Government of Karnataka and health authorities. The organizers hope these localized insights will spark new policies, such as:

* Subsidized screening drives and mobile detection clinics.

* Enhanced awareness for the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical and throat cancers.

* Strengthened counseling to mitigate the “fear factor” associated with diagnosis.

About the Organizers

The Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust continues to be a lifeline for underprivileged patients in coastal Karnataka, providing financial aid and operating 10 “Mahiti Kendras” (Information Centers). Their partner, M.I.O, is a NABH-accredited 120-bed super-specialty hospital that has been a pioneer in affordable, world-class oncology since 2011.
