Mangalore Diocese Equips Parish Convenors to Strengthen Inter-Religious Harmony
The Inter-Religious Dialogue Commission of the Diocese of Mangalore conducted a training programme for Parish Convenors on Sunday at the Shanthi Kiran Pastoral Centre, Bajjodi, with the objective of strengthening interfaith understanding and promoting communal harmony at the grassroots level. The programme was inaugurated by the Vicar General of the Diocese, Msgr. Maxim Lawrence Noronha, who delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration among people of different faiths.

Welcoming the gathering, Rev. Fr Rupesh Madtha, Diocesan Convenor Secretary of the Inter-Religious Dialogue Commission, outlined the Commission’s vision and strategic plans for promoting religious harmony through parish-level initiatives. He also presented practical guidelines for implementation and interacted with participants during an engaging question-and-answer session.

The resource person for the programme, Dr Praveen Joy Saldanha, delivered an insightful presentation on the core principles of inter-religious dialogue. Stressing the Commission’s mission, he said the initiative seeks to foster the common good by building on shared values while respectfully acknowledging religious differences.
Around 50 Parish Convenors out of the total 125 participated in the first phase of the training. The remaining convenors will attend a similar programme scheduled for July 19, 2026.

The programme also witnessed an important organisational transition, with the official selection of new members at the Deanery and Diocesan levels to carry forward the Commission’s mission and activities. The event was compered by Flavia Madtha of Madanthyar, while Anitha Dsa of Agrar proposed the vote of thanks. Former team members Prajwal Sequeira (Derebail), Anil Dsa (Kulshekar), and Grance Monteiro (Vamanjoor) extended their support in coordinating the training programme.

The day began and concluded with prayer and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, reflecting the spiritual foundation of the Commission’s mission. Breakfast and lunch were served, providing participants with opportunities for fellowship, networking, and meaningful discussions. The Inter-Religious Dialogue Commission continues to play a significant role in fostering understanding, mutual respect, and cooperation among different religious communities, working towards peace and the common good of society.
